Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
It is important to celebrate International Women’s Day to bring awareness and education around women’s rights and to celebrate the achievements of women around the world. It is also a day to acknowledge how far women’s equality has progressed over the years but a reminder that there is still further progression to be made.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?
I have been fortunate enough not to have yet faced many barriers so far in my career due to being a woman. However, one common occurrence that I have encountered is being mistaken for someone in a support staff administration role when I mention that I work in a solicitors firm, as for some there is a stereotype of a solicitor. Although stereotypes will always exist over time and with education, such as via International Women’s Day, these assumptions will continue to develop and change.
How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their career?
From an internal point of view employers need to encourage and celebrate the of achievements made by women in the workplace, and give positive recognition to encourage women to put themselves forward for more senior roles. Seeing other women in senior leadership roles is also a key factor to inspire other women to do the same.
What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?
To keep determined to achieve your goals and realise that building a satisfying career can take time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
